The most popular recreation in the area is of the walking variety, the Peak District boasts over 1600 miles of tracks, footpaths etc, so there is no shortage of places to ramble and stroll. During holiday periods and at weekends visitors often frequent the summit of High Wheeldon, adjacent to Wheeldon Trees, to appreciate the view westwards over the River Dove and across Staffordshire. There are several custom provided nature trails within easy reach and two start only two miles away from Wheeldon Trees, these are the High Peak Trail and the Tissington Trail. Both trails share a common starting point at Dowlow Quarry and divide after approximately 3 miles at Parsley Hay. Both trails cater for the walker, cyclist, or for those who prefer the position on horseback and at Parsley Hay you will find refreshment facilities and a cycle hire centre. To whet your appetite there are several famous stately homes in the area with both Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall being less than 30 minutes drive from Wheeldon Trees. If you are looking for thrills the famous theme park at Alton Towers is just 17 miles away, whilst at Matlock Bath you will find Gulliver's Kingdom, complete with alpine cable car rides. There are also several caves in the area open to the public, Poole's Cavern being located just up the road in Buxton. Castleton has several caverns of interest and is famous for the much loved Blue John Stone which can be found nowhere else in the world.
